'Know Who You Are' – Magda Sayeg - Part 1 |
Monkey & the BrownMan begin their global crusade to bring to fans the extraordinary and sometimes ordinary tales of people who 'know who they are'. We want to inspire you and encourage you to explore life, take risks and above all else 'Know Who You Are' in the pursuit of your dreams – however big, or small they may be.
Houston, Texas - who says I can't do that?
It might be an unlikely place to begin a story of passions, and 'rebelious crime', but once you speak to local artist and entrepreneur Magda Sayeg, it becomes the most logical place to start.
'It came from an ugly, boring city… Inspiration is not always beautiful,' spoken like a true believer in following your passion, guerrilla knitter, Magda Sayeg, 'it can come from something you … hate.' It seems that small-town Texas has been a blessing to this energetic woman, and the remoteness of which provides an isolation where you 'don't know you can't do something.'
Magda and her husband Dan Fergus are truly testament to this. Currently running 3 businesses, and with 3 children under the age of 16, Magda's biggest success is still taking shape – in the form of 'knitting graffiti', a phenomenon still relatively unknown in Australia.
Rebel Knitter without a cause?
This global trend, spear-headed by Sayeg, took off 4 years ago, the extent of which Magda hadn't realised until she received an email from a fan in Ethiopia, commenting on her work. Much has been written in the press about the exploits of Sayeg and her 'group' Knitta Please. She has decorated a number of iconic cities with her knitting projects, her proudest of which is a complete bus in Mexico, an unusual, but magical sight to see.
What began as a Tuesday night girl's knitting group and Wednesday morning hangover ritual, sparked an inspiration of artistic-proportion; what do you do with all those unfinished knitting projects? The least technically talented, but quite obviously the most visionary knitter within Knitta Please, Magda has turned her once local decorative projects into a world-wide following.
The global movement for closet knitters?
As a relatively unknown 'artist', there came a point when Magda's crafty talents made the transition from 'silly to serious', when one of her New York installations made it to Saturday Night Live. The organic evolution of increasing opportunities finally prompted Sayeg to make the decision, 'I want to do this, whatever this is'. She is now recognised as the 'founder of a (global) movement', the extent of how many knitter's lives it has touched, still surprising today.
Magda receives requests from young and old fans on a daily basis to join Knitta Please, but she encourages people to form their own 'guerrilla groups', as her personal success leads her into increased travel for commissioned work, taking her and her family all over the world.
Check your inbox's next fortnight for the second half of Monkey and the BrownMan's exploration into the life of Magda Sayeg, as we attempt to answer the big question, can you achieve the impossible dream? Know who you are…
